Neil Gaiman – Stardust
I’ve never really read much of Gaiman’s work for some reason. I’ve seen lots of movies about his books, though. So I figured Stardust is as good as a beginning as every other Gaiman book. I’ve loved the film when I was 18, it is not too long, a nice book to begin the yearly reading challenge.
The book was surprisingly different from the movie. Not that much, but enough that it changes the feeling and the tone entirely. The book feels way more like a fairytale than the movie. It has also somewhat more absurd, fairytale-logic and all that. The whole witch and prince plotlines play out in a way that would be anticlimactic in a movie, I guess.
It is enjoyable to read the same story but with enough differences that it doesn’t get boring. The movie keeps the soul of it, but I like the book better (or maybe I’m just getting old).
