Wavetale

Wavetale showed me that I need to do these memos as soon as I can, because when I looked up the games I completed this last month, I was “oh yeah, Wavetale, I liked it” and then just wondered what the game actually was. Ok, maybe not to that extend, but I did need some seconds the remember the game.

Wavetale is a fun game. And indie 3D adventure plateformer game. Zelda Wind Waker meets Mario. Kind. The story is a very much clichés but serviceable, the characters are what they are in that regard but you do care about them still. The game shines in its gameplay. It is a delight to move around the game, exploring, etc. I did all the extra plateforming challenges because they felt that good to pull off. Doing 3D plateformers seems to be hard, since there are not that many anymore and a lot of them are not that fun to play, so I am very fond of this game nonetheless. It is a nice little game for one afternoon. This is its strength, but also its weakness. We do have a lot of nice little games for one afternoon now. Excruciating so. Steam is filled up with so many games that are good if not groundbreaking you need a lifetime to play them. It is great if you love to play video games. But in the end, nothing really stands out. You can fall on that little gem by pure chance or never even know its existence. I will remember more about Expedition 33 that this game. Ten years from now, I will read this and be like “oh yeah, this was sweet, I completely forget about this?”. Even now, the most I remember is the fun time I had.

But hey, nice and short 3D plateformer? Go for it. It’s very good.
